长久以来，美国内华达州（Nevada）境内51区（Area 51）军事基地藏有外星生物和太空飞船政府机密的传言不绝于耳。

今年6月，有人在脸书上发起“硬闯”该美军基地的活动，约350万名网友热烈响应，并相约在今年9月20日，即当地时间上周五，一起勇闯51区，去寻找外星生物。

网上一个玩笑所引发的这场声势浩大的行动，最终惊动了美国军方。美国国防视觉信息服务（Defense Visual Information Distribution Service）上周五在其官方推特上发帖警告预备“硬闯”军事基地的年轻人，并配上一张B-2隐形轰炸机的照片和列队军人的照片。

The tweet, posted on Friday on the Twitter account of the Defense Visual Information Distribution Service (DVIDS), took aim at UFO fans and curiosity seekers who poured into the Nevada desert this week, after an online campaign to “storm” the U.S. military base long rumored to house government secrets about extraterrestrial life and spaceships.

长久以来，一直有传闻直指51区藏有外星生物和太空飞船的政府机密。有人在网上发起“硬闯”这个美军基地的活动后，国防视觉信息服务上周五在其推特账号发布一则推文，针对在本周涌入内华达沙漠的不明飞行物爱好者和对51区感到好奇的民众。

Alongside a photo of military men and women standing at attention in uniform in front of a B-2 stealth bomber, it read, “The last thing #Millennials will see if they attempt the #area51raid today.”

You need to more than merely apologize via tweet. It’s extremely irresponsible for an account representing the US military to make credible threats against anyone, let alone its own citizenry.

The original tweet did trigger some controversy and criticism, but went largely unnoticed amid an avalanche of memes posted under the viral hashtag – while some even found it amusing and said the author deserves a promotion.

However, someone higher-ranking apparently got worried that the bomber joke could fly over the heads of UFO hunters, or offend millennials, and rushed to delete the meme, issuing an apology and distancing the unit from the actions of the employee in charge of the DVIDSHub account.

然而，一些高层显然对这个轰炸机会越过不明飞行物爱好者脑袋的玩笑感到不安，或者担心会冒犯到千禧一代，于是赶紧删除了这个表情包，并发表道歉声明，使该部门与负责其推特账户的员工的行为保持距离。

On Saturday, DVIDS said on Twitter that an employee of its DVIDSHub account posted a tweet that “in NO WAY supports the stance of the Department of Defense. It was inappropriate and we apologize for this mistake.”

但其实，这场“勇闯51区”的活动虽在社交平台上声势浩大，最后却是雷声大雨点小，仅有约150人到场，有些人还cosplay成外星人的模样，气氛欢乐犹如嘉年华，只有少数人遭到逮捕。

In Nevada, any fears about a serious attempt to raid Area 51 appeared to have been unfounded. About 150 people, some in alien garb, gathered near the base on Friday in a festive atmosphere with only a handful of arrests.

This is far from the first time that the U.S. military has screwed up on Twitter. On Dec. 31, U.S. Strategic Command deleted a New Year's Eve tweet indicating it was about to ring in 2019 with a thermonuclear holocaust.

这已经不是美军第一次在推特上把事情搞砸了。去年12月31日，美军战略司令部删除了一条新年前夜的推特，该推特暗示2019年它将以一场热核大屠杀来鸣钟欢庆新年。

STRATCOM, which has purview over the U.S. military's nuclear arsenal, tweeted a video of a B-2 dropping bombs along with the joke: ""#TimesSquare tradition rings in the #NewYear by dropping the big ball ... if ever needed, we are #ready to drop something much, much bigger."

Shortly thereafter, the command issued an apology, saying the tweet was "in poor taste."
